2010 Ride to Remember Information

City of Poth Ride to Remember

The City of Poth will be holding its third annual Ride to Remember bicycle ride on Saturday, September 11th, 2010. The ride benefits the Alzheimer’s Association, San Antonio Chapter and the City of Poth Park Department. This has been a wonderful event over the past couple of years. We had 200 riders the first year and went up to 300 riders for the second year even with heavy rain fall in the area. We have had riders from all over Texas including: Tyler, Harlingen, Houston, Dallas, Austin, and Corpus Christi.

The ride takes off from the Poth City Park at the intersection of Coy and Hosek streets at 8:00am. At the park, we will have live music by Junction 541 band and the national anthem by the Judson HS Choir. We will also have a bike maintenance area sponsored by the great guys at Action Bike of Converse, Texas. They will help with any last minute things you need to have a great ride. Also, we will have a breakfast station with Gatorade, coffee, bananas and other snacks. Then after you are done, the Bar-B-Q lunch provided by Lazy J Bar-B-Q will be served under the pavilion. The lunch consists of brisket, sausage and all the fixings. The lunch in FREE to all riders.

The ride consists of four different distance levels. The ride rolls through the south Texas countryside. The route crisscrosses over the San Antonio River and through several cattle ranches and farms in the area. We have Police escorts on all levels and truck maintenance service with tubes, tools and water to ensure the safety of all riders through out the course. We also have several water stations located along the route with water, Gatorade, snacks and restrooms. We have a 12 mile, beginner / family ride with rolling hills and a water station at the half waypoint. There is also a 22-mile intermediate ride with three water stations. Then there are a 44-mile and a 66-mile expert rides with several water stations through out. There is also a Junior Ride for small children that rides safely on the enclosed hike and bike trail in the park.

Half of the proceeds go to the Alzheimer’s Association, San Antonio Chapter. The ride was started in honor of Martina Pruski of Kosciusko, Texas. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2004 and passed away with this horrible disease in January 2008. Many of her children and grandchildren are the volunteers you will meet throughout the course. I am sure that many of you either have a grandparent that are affected with Alzheimer’s or know someone does. The great people at the Alzheimer’s Association are working hard to not only find a cure, but also work with families that need help understanding the realties of living with this disease.

The other half of the proceeds goes to the City of Poth Parks Department. Over the past two years, the ride has help to raise enough money to build a 1.2 mile long hike and bike asphalt trail in the city park. We would like to continue with adding exercise equipment, shade structures, and landscaping along the trail. It is a wonderful sight to see all the people out exercising on the new trail.

Thanks for taking the time to read our story about the City of Poth Ride to Remember. We look forward to riding with each of you. A donation of $30 includes you signup fee, Free Bar-B-Q lunch and a dry fit athletic ride shirt. The Bar-B-Q lunch sales will be open to the public at $7.00 each.
